How
does VERBATHON work?
GENERAL:
Verbathon
acts both as a method for teaching and as a means for students to
solidify the lessons learned through application. It incorporates
interactive learning by touch and it shows students that language
is systematic. The educator uses a customized wallchart and a set
of cards, (both part of the Verbathon Kit), together with various
lesson strategies provided, to show students the rules of verb application
and sentence structure. Students learn by playing and manipulating
cards. The Verbathon teaching kit is versatile and can be used to
play many different games to reinforce language skills. Verbathon
has been shown in classroom settings to effectively capture attention
and foster a strong sense of interest.
DAILY ACTIVITIES FOR DRILL AND PRACTICE:
When
certain basics are learned, the students are then encouraged to
administer activities, (previously modelled by the educator), that
build on the basics. For example, on a daily basis, a student is
chosen to ask the class a set of pre-determined questions. He or
she would ask the questions in the target language. In responding
to the questions, students would illustrate the answer by manipulating
cards on the customized wall chart. This utilizes the students'
tactile sense and empowers them with a sense of ownership in their
own learning.
VERBATHON
- THE TOURNAMENT:
As
an effective method for students to practice verb conjugation, Verbathon
becomes a tournament in which teams race against the clock in constructing
various sentence structures using the wall chart and cards. The
Verbathon approach inspires students to treat the process of learning
as fun rather than dull. Students' thought processes can increase
dramatically because they are required to put together sentences
and verbs with ever increasing speed . In addition, students are
encouraged to take ownership by administering the game. All roles
including the judges and timers with the exception of the facilitator
(i.e. teacher) are filled by the students. This fosters teamwork
and independence.
CONCLUSION:
Language
educators will appreciate how VERBATHON
is able to captivate students, celebrate their successes and simplify
lesson preparation. Since students are more motivated to aquire
language skills when they view the process of learning as fun and
interactive, the VERBATHON
system engages them through its interactive strategies, student
empowerment, fun games, integration and application to their language
skills.
